The Network of Civil Society Groups in Osun has faulted the Osun State Government over its ongoing waste management enforcement.
The group said the indiscriminate arrest of residents, parade of alleged offenders, circulation of their arrest videos on social media and the alleged imposition of a N50,000 fine amount to violations of citizens’ rights.
In a statement issued on Friday by its Convener, Comrade Olowu Emmanuel, the group said while it supports efforts to ensure a clean and healthy environment, the government cannot enforce waste disposal regulations without providing a clear, accessible and effective waste management system.
It described the present arrangement as inadequate, noting that the few Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators serving many communities reportedly evacuate waste only once in one or two months, leaving residents with limited disposal options.
The group called on the government to make public a comprehensive waste management policy that will spell out how waste will be collected, how often evacuation will be done, designated disposal points, and the responsibilities of government, operators and residents.
