Stop calling him Bola, address him as President, Salam tells Atiku

The lawmaker representing Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency, Rep. Bamidele Salam, has cautioned former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar over what he described as disrespectful language against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a post on his Facebook page on Friday, Salam stated said it would have been understanding if activists and ordinary citizens express anger in strong terms, adding that such language is indecorous for a statesman and former presidential contender.

“It wouldn’t have mattered to me if those manner of communication were used by some activists or citizens expressing their anger with the President, but for a statesman and contender for the Presidency to denigrate the incumbent in this manner appears to me as indecorous,” he said.

The lawmaker noted that regardless of personal or political differences, the office of the President deserves respect.

“You do not even need to like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to properly address him as President Tinubu or simply Mr. President rather than this million times mention of Bola in a one-page criticism of his administration,” he noted.

He added that if there are personal scores between the two leaders, public statements in an election year should not be used to vent them.

“Criticise President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Pick holes in his programmes and policies. Campaign vigorously against him. But please respect the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Salam said.

Salam, however, said national leader of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande and the APC leadership had in the past also used insulting words against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
