The lawmaker representing Osun West, Senator Lere Oyewumi, has disclosed that the constitution review represents a critical opportunity to correct longstanding structural imbalances that have hindered Nigeria’s growth and development.
The Senate Deputy Minority Leader stated this during the two-day joint retreat on the review of the 1999 Constitution, lawmakers from both the Senate and House of Representatives in Lagos.
Oyewumi in a Facebook post, noted that he emphasized during the retreat that the constitutional review goes beyond being a mere legislative exercise.
He also stressed that the ongoing review process must truly reflect the collective aspirations of Nigerians and provide lasting solutions to the nation’s persistent challenges.
He wrote, “I Attend 2-Day Joint Retreat on the Review of the 1999 Constitution as I joined my distinguished colleagues from both the Senate and House of Representatives for the commencement of critical deliberations on the comprehensive review of the 1999 Constitution — a process that includes considering proposals for the creation of 55 new states and 278 additional local government areas (LGAs) across the Federation.
“I emphasized that the constitutional review goes beyond being a mere legislative exercise — it represents a critical opportunity to correct longstanding structural imbalances that have hindered Nigeria’s growth and development.
“I also stressed that the ongoing review process must truly reflect the collective aspirations of Nigerians and provide lasting solutions to the nation’s persistent challenges.”
