Police arrest suspect over alleged kidnap threat in Osun

The Osun State Police Command has arrested one Babangida Muhammed over an alleged attempt to kidnap and extort a resident of the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the spokesperson of the Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said Muhammed was arrested by operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, Team H, on September 4, 2026.

Ojelabi said the complainant reported receiving threatening telephone calls from an unknown caller who identified himself as Babangida Muhammed. He added that the suspect allegedly threatened to kidnap the complainant and members of his family unless he paid the sum of ₦13,000,000.

“Upon receipt of the complaint, operatives of the VCRU Team H, acting on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Zungura psc(+), mnips, commenced intelligence gathering and strategically planned an operation to apprehend the suspect,” the statement read.

According to the PPRO, a meeting point was agreed at Telemu area along the Iwo-Ibadan Road in Osun State, where the suspect directed the complainant to bring the demanded money.

“The complainant, acting in accordance with the operational plan, went to the agreed location with the money. Shortly afterwards, the suspect allegedly arrived, picked up the box containing the money and attempted to flee into the bush. The police operatives immediately emerged from their covert positions and arrested him before he could escape,” Ojelabi said.

The statement added that the suspect is currently in police custody, while investigation is ongoing to determine the involvement of other persons in the alleged offence.
