The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has paid glowing tribute to the late leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, who died on Tuesday at the age of 100.
In a condolence statement issued on Wednesday by the palace Director of Media and Public Affairs, Moses Olafare, the monarch described Fasoranti’s death as a profound loss to the Yoruba race and Nigeria.
The Ooni said the centenarian lived a life marked by dedicated service, wisdom, integrity and unwavering commitment to his people.
He noted that Pa Fasoranti belonged to a generation of respected leaders whose contributions to Nigeria’s political development, preservation of Yoruba identity and struggle for democratic governance would remain indelible in history.
According to him, “the late Afenifere leader’s commitment to justice, good governance, equity and the welfare of the Yoruba people reflected enduring values of responsible leadership and service to humanity.”
The Ooni observed that Fasoranti’s influence extended beyond Afenifere, as his decades of public service made him a respected voice in discourse on the future of Yorubaland and Nigeria, adding that his life offers lessons in patriotism, perseverance and collective interest.
Similarly, the former deputy governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has mourned the late Yoruba leader, describing him as a rare gem and a true nation-builder.
In a condolence message signed by the DG of Rescue Mission, Hon. Ajibola Famurewa, Omisore said Fasoranti was not just a leader but an institution whose wealth of experience would be sorely missed by the Yoruba race and Nigeria.
He stated that what made the late elder statesman exceptional was that even at 100, he remained politically alert, mentally sound and intellectually sharp, recalling events and dates with precision, and living a life defined by uprightness, discipline and incorruptible leadership.
