2027: Basiru calls Sowore ‘skit maker’ over Aso Rock request

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has described African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore as a “skit maker” following his request to use the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja, for a campaign event ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sowore’s party had earlier asked President Bola Tinubu to approve the use of Aso Rock for the inauguration of its Presidential Campaign Council scheduled for November 11, 2026.

The party also requested food, drinks and other logistical support for 5,000 participants expected at the event, citing multiparty democracy, political inclusiveness and equal treatment of political parties.

Reacting to the request during an interview on Channels TV, Basiru questioned Sowore’s political standing and challenged him to first secure a seat in a state House of Assembly before expecting to be taken seriously as a politician.

“Sowore is a skit maker. Let him struggle to even get a seat in the House of Assembly as a politician, and then people will begin to take him seriously,” the APC national secretary said.

Basiru also criticised the AAC’s electoral performance, claiming that rejected ballot papers received more votes than the party in the 2023 general elections.

“Even rejected ballot papers had more votes than his party in the 2023 election,” he said.

Replying to Basiru in a post on X, Sowore claimed he helped the APC National Secretary tp gain admission into the University of Lagos, UNILAG, after he was expelled from the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN.

Sowore presented a photograph he took with Basiru in 1998 when he led the Congress of Progressive Youths, COPY, during the fight against military dictatorship.

“I received him alongside Kunle Adegoke, popularly known as K-Rad, who is now a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. We provided them with an enabling environment to apply to re-enter the university, gain admission, and study Law at the University of Lagos,” Sowore said.
