Rotary Clubs in Osun State, in collaboration with the Osun Health Insurance Agency, OSHIA, and the Rasaq Akindele Foundation, have provided free medical services for over 500 residents of the state.
The intervention covered cataract and pterygium surgeries, provision of corrective glasses, scaling and polishing, curettage, tooth extraction, GIC filling and composite build-up.
Speaking at the flag-off of the outreach on Monday, the Coordinator and Rotary Major Donor, Rotarian Dr Rasaq Akindele, said the programme was initiated to assist vulnerable residents who cannot afford medical bills.
He said the idea was born after routine visits to eye and dental clinics and correctional centres, where the team met aged persons gradually losing their sight, mothers who could no longer see clearly to care for their children, and residents who could not chew food due to dental complications.
Akindele disclosed that 150 of the beneficiaries require surgery, assuring that all surgeries will be carried out at no cost to the beneficiaries.
“To the glory of God, we have successfully screened over 300 persons with eye defects and over 200 persons with dental issues. That is a total of over 500 beneficiaries who walked into our screening centres with pain and are now filled with hope.
“And we want to announce boldly here that every single person among them who requires surgery will be operated upon free of charge. No one will be left behind. Surgeries commence today, Monday, 12th October,” he said.
He added that the outreach will also extend to correctional centres in the state, where reusable sanitary pads will be donated to female inmates to promote maternal hygiene and dignity.
He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, corporate organisations and government to support similar initiatives aimed at restoring hope to the less privileged.
In his remarks, Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by his Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr Adekunle Akindele, described the initiative as a reflection of the administration’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of Osun residents.
Adeleke commended the organisers, noting that “This is a thoughtful intervention that promotes menstrual hygiene, dignity, confidence and the well-being of girls and women in our society.”
