The Federal Government has approved and released N2.1 billion to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, to strengthen its renal treatment programme and improve access to affordable kidney care.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Professor John Okeniyi, disclosed this on Thursday during activities marking the hospital’s 50th anniversary.
Okeniyi said the funding, provided under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, would revive the hospital’s renal replacement programme and make dialysis and other specialised kidney treatments more accessible to patients.
“I thank the President because we have up to N2.1 billion appropriated for our renal programme. By the time we do this and get the money, I believe the renal replacement programme is back. That is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.
He expressed optimism that the intervention would restore the hospital’s capacity to provide essential renal services.
Also speaking at the event, former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Iyiola Omisore, commended President Tinubu for the intervention, describing it as a welcome development for Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
Omisore, however, called for sustained government and stakeholder support for the health sector, stressing that access to quality healthcare remains fundamental to human existence.
“Health is essential to life. That is why I consider this development by President Bola Tinubu’s administration as laudable,” he said.
The intervention is expected to provide a significant boost to renal care delivery at OAUTHC as the institution marks five decades of service in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
