Osun retirees cry out over unpaid pension bonds

Members of the Independent Unbonded CPS Retirees in Osun State (2018–2026) have appealed to Governor Ademola Adeleke to pay their outstanding pension bonds, lamenting that many of their members are dying without enjoying the fruits of their labour.

In an open letter to the governor, signed by its Chairman, Comrade Moses Fayemi, the group said its members are senior citizens who served the state meritoriously but have been left to suffer because their legitimate entitlements remain unpaid.

The retirees recalled that during his campaign for his first term in office, Governor Adeleke promised to clear all outstanding pension bonds within six months if elected.

They claimed that throughout his four years in office, only the 2017 batch of retirees benefited from bond payments, leaving those who retired between 2018 and 2026 still waiting.

According to the retirees, they have made several efforts to draw the attention of the government to their plight, but the response they continue to receive is that their bonds will be paid when the issue of Local Government allocations is resolved.

“Our people are dying every day! Some are bedridden, while many others are struggling to feed themselves and their families.

“We strongly believe that the resources accruing to the state should be given due consideration in addressing our outstanding pension bond obligations. We are particularly worried that our group appears to have been left behind, despite the urgent nature of our needs,” the group said.

“Are we no longer part of Osun State? Have we been forgotten after years of meritorious service?” they asked.

The retirees said they believe Governor Adeleke is a compassionate leader who understands the importance of the welfare of senior citizens, but expressed concern that their suffering may not have been adequately brought to his attention by those around him.

They therefore appealed directly to the governor to look into their situation and give immediate attention to the payment of their outstanding pension bonds.

“We are not asking for a favour. We are only demanding the payment of our legitimate entitlements after years of dedicated service to Osun State,” they said.

The group also appealed to well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations, human rights groups, religious leaders, traditional rulers, journalists and social media influencers to help amplify their voices.

“Please help us beg the Osun State Government to pay our outstanding pension bonds before more of us die without enjoying the fruits of our labour,” they pleaded.
