Family demands probe into man’s death in Osun police cell

The family of Taofiki Mustapha, who died inside a police cell in Agbeye community, Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, has demanded probe into the circumstances leading to his death.

The demand was made in a petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone XI, Osogbo

It would be recalled that the deceased died inside the cell of Police Outpost Agbeye after he was arrested over alleged theft of cocoa pods.

The Osun State Police Command had earlier claimed that the deceased committed suicide while in custody.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, had told journalists that the deceased was apprehended by members of the community for allegedly stealing cocoa and was taken to the community’s monarch, who instructed that he be handed over to the police.

But the family, through its solicitors, L.S Bello & Co., in the petition dated October 7, 2026, and filed on behalf of Madam Nafisat Taofiki, Oba Aree Ogboni-Abdul Wahab Oriade and Are Ogboni Kwara Awoyemi Elegbede, accused the Agbeye Police Post, Mr. Mufu Jimoh, Wasiu Egbebi, Taye Olaoye, Chief Ajasa, the Alagbeye of Agbeye and others of murder, assault and conspiracy.

The petition alleged that Mustapha was beaten by the named individuals over the cocoa theft allegation before the monarch directed that he be taken to the police outpost, where he later died.

The petitioners added that it was yet to be established that the deceased actually stole the cocoa pods, and urged the AIG to investigate the circumstances surrounding his arrest, alleged beating and subsequent death in custody.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Zone XI Command headquarters, Osogbo, Olanrewaju Ojedele, said two suspects had made statements on the issue.

“Two suspects, Kabiyesi and one other person, have been invited and they wrote statements on the issue. They were released thereafter. We are waiting for the postmortem result to know the other facts. The result will assist the police to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death,” he said.
