The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, has urged former lawmakers to support the socio-economic reforms of President Bola Tinubu.
Basiru said the reforms are already yielding positive results, urging the former legislators to provide moral backing to the president.
He made the call on Saturday during the Southern summit of former legislators.
Basiru who represented Osun Central in the 9th Assembly, said former legislators have the responsibility to serve as guides, mentors, and advocates of good governance.
According to him, there has been an improvement in security, adding that efforts have been intensified to combat terrorism and banditry across the country.
The APC chieftain noted that Tinubu’s reforms were designed to restructure the economy, restore confidence in investors, and promote social justice through short-term sacrifices.
He said “This administration has undertaken bold and sweeping reforms to help stabilize the Nigerian economy and sustain national development.
“At the forefront of these reforms was the removal of the petrol subsidy. This has now afforded space for Infrastructure development and social investment by the three tiers of government.
“The administration further unified
the multiple exchange rate systems into one market, driven exchange rate to stabilise foreign inflows and stabilize the naira. It also introduced tax and revenue laws to widen its revenue base; the student loan schemes and several social initiatives to ease the plight of the vulnerable.
“There has been an improvement in security as efforts are intensified to combat terrorism and banditry across the country, In all these reforms are designed to restructure the economy, restore confidence in investors, and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth, social justice, and national harmony through some short-term sacrifices.
“Therefore, as men and women who have once borne the weight of legislative responsibility and continue to remain critical stakeholders in nation-building we must lend our collective support for the reforms and initiatives of this administration.
“President Tinubu promised to
fulfill the pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda for the benefit of all Nigerians. It is our duty as former legislators, not only to hold him accountable but also to provide the moral, political, and institutional backing required for his administration to succeed in these
endeavours.”
