Anxiety in Osun schools over mass failure in WAEC qualifying exam

High security presence is expected in the premises of most secondary schools in Osun State, especially in Osogbo, the state capital today, following plot by some students to protest after failing unifying examinations organised to select public school students that will sit for next WAEC on the bill of state government.

The unifying examination was held in all public high schools across the state between Monday, August 23 and Friday, August 27 with over 35, 000 students participating.

But a very reliable source in the Ministry of Education said only 7,000 secured enough marks to make the cutoff; that state government will assist to pay WAEC fees next year.

Since the results of the examinations got to schools last week Thursday, there has been growing tension among students because of the high rate of failure and insinuations that those that failed may have to repeat the exam.

According to National Mirror’s findings, students of Anglican High School, Kola Balogun Area of Osogbo started the protest on Friday when news filtered in that almost all those who sat for the qualifying examination in the school failed.

Sources in the school also said officers and men of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, were quickly alerted and students were hurriedly dismissed as the school closed early for the day.

However, reliable security sources Sunday evening, who confided in our correspondent, said because intelligence reports revealed that some students are planning to foment trouble in schools, security agencies have been put on alert in case of any eventuality.

Some students contacted by our correspondent on the issue expressed reservation over the outcome of the examination, blaming high rate of failure on plot to limit the number of students that will benefit from the payment for WAEC.

Efforts to get reaction to the development proved futile as calls to government’s spokespersons were not answered.
