Mr. Olawale Rasheed, the spokesperson to Governor Ademola Adeleke State, has dismissed allegations by the Social Democratic Party candidate for Osun Central, Architect Goke Omigbodun, that his campaign billboards were vandalised on the orders of the state governor.
Rasheed, in a statement on Friday, said the governor has no hand in the alleged act and described the claim as baseless and attention-seeking.
Recalled that Omigbodun, in a post on Wednesday, accused the state government of oppression and targeted removal of his campaign banners, calling on traditional rulers, religious leaders and community elders to caution the governor and his associates.
Rasheed, however, said Adeleke is not contesting for Senate, is not from Osun Central, and is too preoccupied with governance to be concerned about the billboards of a “politically insignificant political actor.”
He described billboard vandalisation as a regrettable but recurring challenge in election periods, noting that even Governor Adeleke and members of the Peoples Democratic Party have been victims.
“Billboards of the Accord senatorial candidate for Osun Central, Hon. Ganiyu Asejere, were also vandalised in Osogbo and other parts of the district. Candidates are now devising ways of securing their billboards, especially as the signage agency has no mandate to stand guard at billboard sites,” he said.
Rasheed urged Omigbodun to move beyond his “historical hatred” for the governor and focus on his campaign instead of dragging the state leadership into an issue it knows nothing about.
“We affirm that the governor is not involved in any billboard vandalisation. The allegation is baseless and a mere distractive ploy from a bitter politician,” he added.
