An Islamic cleric, Imam Olorunlomerue, has called on politicians in Osun State to retrieve firearms allegedly distributed to political thugs during the last governorship election to prevent further bloodshed in the state.
The cleric, who spoke on a political programme on a private radio station in Osogbo, warned that the weapons could soon be turned against residents if left in circulation.
Olorunlomerue said he was alarmed after encountering one of the alleged thugs in his neighbourhood who was carrying what he described as a sophisticated, brand-new firearm.
“All the guns politicians gave to thugs can’t be retrieved. They will start terrorising people with those guns soon. Policemen are not the only people with guns.
“One of them in my neighbourhood visited me recently. The gun he had with him, the police don’t have such a thing. The gun is brand new. It was given to him by politicians,” he alleged.
“But to you who gave them those guns, be anticipating their return. Stop the killing spree. You have turned bullets to souvenirs,” the cleric appealed to those who allegedly armed the hoodlums.
