The spokesperson of Imole Campaign Council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has announced that sixteen members of the Accord Party arrested for allegedly canvassing for Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osun State have regained their freedom following court intervention.
Olajengbesi, in a post on his Facebook page, said the 16 members were released after spending 24 hours in police detention.
According to Olajengbesi, the party members were arrested “simply for canvassing votes for Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osun State during the just-concluded election.”
He alleged that the arrests were made on the instructions of the Commissioner of Police in Osun State and that the detainees were driven by road to Abuja, Keffi and Suleja, where they were held without any established offence.
He also disclosed that the court granted unconditional bail to the Accord Party House of Representatives candidate for Ijesa South Federal Constituency, Alaba Popoola, after 26 days in detention.
Olajengbesi alleged Alabama’s arrest was “politically motivated and carried out at the instance of Senator Francis Fadahunsi.”
Describing the incident as a threat to democracy, the lawyer condemned the police action.
“This is deeply troubling and constitutes a serious dent on the professionalism and institutional integrity of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
He, however, commended the judiciary for its role, adding, “We commend the judiciary for once again standing as a safeguard against arbitrary detention and abuse of state power.”
