The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has asked the Court of Appeal in Abuja to halt the implementation of a Federal High Court judgment recognising Olaitan Salawu-Adeniyi as its governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun State election.
The party, in a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, said it has filed an appeal marked CA/ABJ/CV/1011/2026 against the judgment delivered on June 24, 2026, by Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/402/2026.
The party is also seeking an order restraining the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from enforcing the judgment until the appeal is determined.
The SDP contended that the High Court directed INEC to implement a Court of Appeal judgment of March 27, 2026, recognising Shehu Gabam as national chairman.
The party argued that the Supreme Court had already set aside that decision on May 22, 2026, making the High Court’s order inconsistent.
“The SDP is seeking an order staying execution of the Federal High Court judgment pending the determination of its appeal, and an order restraining INEC from implementing the decision,” the statement said.
The party added that the appeal raises substantial issues for the Court of Appeal’s consideration.
The SDP said the dispute arose from the Osun governorship primary involving Salawu-Adeniyi, Gabam, and former National Youth Leader Ogbonna Okechukwu, whom it described as non-members.
