The Osun State Police Command on Tuesday, said three of its officers are receiving treatment after sustaining gunshot injuries during a clash between rival factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Osogbo.
The command spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this while addressing journalists on Tuesday.
According to Ojelabi, trouble began when a faction of the NURTW protested being barred from accessing a garage by a rival group. The protest, he said, escalated into violence across major motor parks in Osogbo, prompting police intervention to restore order.
He said a distress call was later received around 5:30pm that hoodlums were shooting sporadically at Oke-Ijetu area of Osogbo. A team of Anti-Robbery and Violent Crime Response Unit operatives was deployed to the scene.
“On getting to the scene, the hoodlums, suspected to be loyal to one Wakili Alowonle, opened fire on police operatives. Three security operatives sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries and are currently responding to treatment at the hospital,” Ojelabi stated.
The PPRO said one suspect, 40-year-old Adedeji Saheed Opeyemi, was arrested during the encounter.
He said the suspect confessed that he was invited by one “Sibi” who allegedly gave him a pump action gun after receiving a call from Alowonle to meet at Oke-Ijetu.
Items recovered from the suspect include six expended cartridges, four vehicles, four motorcycles, military camouflage and charms.
