The Osun State Police Command has confirmed a violent clash between two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, in Osogbo on Monday.
The Command said the crisis began after a faction of the union protested being denied access to motor parks by the dominant group.
According to the police, the protest later degenerated into a violent confrontation between the two factions.
Earlier on Monday, NURTW members staged protests across major motor parks in the state, passing a vote of no confidence in the state chairman of the union, Nurudeen Alowonle.
In a statement on Monday evening signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, the Command expressed concern over the incident and called on all parties to sheathe their swords.
The statement read: “Immediately the Police Command received the distress call about the incident that led to disruption of public peace and normal commercial activities, the Police swiftly swung into action and used minimal force to disperse the protesters to restore normalcy.
“Meanwhile, officers have been stationed at the various parks within the State to avoid further breakdown of law and order.”
The Command urged members and leaders of the affected factions to cease all forms of hostilities and embrace dialogue to resolve grievances, or channel their complaints to the appropriate authorities.
“All stakeholders are urged to exercise restraint and avoid actions or statements capable of further escalating tensions pending determination of those to manage the parks by the relevant authorities,” the release added.
