Twelve of the 14 political parties contesting in next month’s governorship election in Osun State on Thursday signed Peace and Accountability charters ahead of the August 15 poll.
The parties signed the documents at the Osun 2026 Democratic Governance, Peace and Electoral Integrity Summit, organised by the Osun Development Association, ODA, in Osogbo.
The signatory parties are Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Peoples Party, Boot Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, Peoples Redemption Party, Young Progressive Party and Zenith Labour Party.
The Chairman of ODA, Dr. Segun Aina, OFR, whose address was delivered by Dr Tunji Olugbodi, urged political actors to embrace peace, issue-based campaigning and accountability.
He said the Peace Charter commits parties to non-violence and respect for electoral institutions, while the Governance Charter outlines citizen expectations on education, healthcare, security, youth employment, fiscal transparency and gender equity.
“This election presents an opportunity to demonstrate that Nigeria’s democracy is maturing. However, a poorly conducted poll could deepen institutional distrust and civic disillusionment,” Aina stated.
Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by his Deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to a peaceful, free and credible election.
“Our belief is simply that no political ambition is worth the blood of any citizen and no office is more valuable than the life of a single man, woman or child,” Adeleke said.
Other party representatives at the summit also pledged to abide by the law and conduct issue-based campaigns to ensure the credibility of the August 15 governorship poll.
