Owa calls for unified security framework to tackle insecurity in Ijesaland

The Owa Obokun Adimula and Paramount Ruler of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, has called for a unified security framework among traditional rulers to combat banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes plaguing Ijesaland.

Owa Haastrup made the call on Saturday, during a closed-door security meeting with traditional rulers in Ijesaland.

The monarch said the rising attacks on forests, farms, and communities demand urgent collective action beyond reliance on government and conventional security agencies.

“We must reorganise and empower our local vigilante and community watch groups. They must receive our full backing and work in seamless synergy with conventional security forces,” the monarch stated.

He urged village heads and community leaders to profile new settlers, monitor movements in forests, and expose illegal mining hideouts.

“Every community must know who resides within its space,” he added.

The Owa Obokun also advocated the use of traditional institutions and spiritual leaders to deter crime where statutory law falls short.

“Where the law of the land meets its limits, we must deploy our traditional institutions working alongside spiritual leaders to place curses on perpetrators and deter informants and collaborators within our midst,” he said.
