Oyetola aide faults Osun speaker over violence allegation, demands retraction

The Special Adviser to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Bolaji Akinola, has dismissed allegations linking former Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, to recent violence in Osun State.

Akinola described the claims as mischievous, malicious and politically motivated.

According to him, the allegation credited to the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, amounted to a deliberate attempt to tarnish Oyetola’s reputation, insisting that the former governor’s record in public service had never been associated with violence or the sponsorship of thuggery.

He further described the Speaker’s comments as reckless and unfounded, adding that they called into question his judgment.

“For making such a malicious and irresponsible allegation, Egbedun needs to have his head thoroughly examined to ascertain his mental state,” Akinola said.

According to him, it was inconceivable that anyone familiar with Oyetola’s four-year tenure in Osun State would accuse him of involvement in violent activities, given his consistent emphasis on peace, stability and lawful governance.

Akinola alleged that the Speaker himself had in the past led individuals to disrupt a political gathering organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), during which several persons were reportedly injured.

He also urged Egbedun and Governor Ademola Adeleke to desist from what he described as shielding criminal elements, arguing that such actions undermine efforts to maintain peace in the state.

“How can a man who did not lift a finger in retaliation, even when he was attacked during the EndSARS protests, now be accused of orchestrating violence?” he queried.

Akinola maintained that those with a history of deploying non-state actors to intimidate political opponents were known within the system, stressing that such conduct was inconsistent with Oyetola’s character and political values.

He also condemned the killing of a teenager during the recent violence in Osun State, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable.

The aide extended condolences to the bereaved family on behalf of the Minister and called on the Nigeria Police Force to ensure that those responsible for the killing are identified, arrested and prosecuted, regardless of their status.

He urged security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to prevent further escalation of violence in the state.
