Osun Rep calls for restoration of Orolu state constituency

Member of the House of Representatives for Irepodun/Orolu/Olorunda/Osogbo Federal Constituency, Hon Adewale Adebayo, has moved a motion for the restoration of Orolu State Constituency, 12 years after a Federal High Court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to implement it.

Adebayo, according to a statement by his media office, presented the motion on the floor of the House on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, describing the continued suppression of the constituency as a violation of the constitution and a denial of democratic rights to the people of Orolu Local Government Area.

“Justice delayed is justice denied. For 12 years, the people of Orolu have been denied their constitutional right to representation in the Osun State House of Assembly despite a clear court judgment delivered on May 28, 2014. This House must act to correct this injustice,” the lawmaker said while presenting the motion.

He recalled that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission in 2004 had written to the National Assembly seeking approval to restore suppressed state constituencies nationwide, including Orolu.

According to the lawmaker, Suit No. FHC/OS/CS/10/2013 at the Federal High Court, Osogbo, directed INEC to take all necessary steps to include Orolu state constituency in elections starting from 2015, adding that the judgment remains unimplemented.

Adebayo also drew the House’s attention to Section 91 of the 1999 Constitution, which provides that each state House of Assembly shall have not less than 24 and not more than 40 members, with seats shared proportionately. Osun currently has 26 members instead of 27.

“The Constitution provides for 27 constituencies in Osun. Today we have only 26. This one missing seat belongs to Orolu, and its absence has forced a rotational arrangement between Irepodun and Orolu LGAs. That is not democracy, that is compromise,” he said.
