Students of the University of Ilesa, Osun State, on Monday took to the streets to protest against the high accommodation fees imposed by the university management, labeling them as “satanic” and exploitative.
The protesters, who blocked the road to express their frustration and disappointment, claimed that the fees have become a burden on their families.
They also alleged that the increment in accommodation fee by the school management led to a surge in rent prices across Ijesha land, adding that landlords now used the university’s rates as a reference point.
Osun.life had earlier reported that residents of Ilesa, have appealed to the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, to intervene on the rising cost of accommodation in Ijesaland.
The residents made the appeal following a letter written by a concerned resident on the escalating cost of accommodation in some areas in the town.
In the letter posted on Facebook, the concerned resident named areas like Ido-Ijesa, Imola, Isua,, and Ibodi as the most affected.
“It has come to our collective notice that there are heavy levies on single-room apartments, a significant increase in agent fees, and numerous other inspection charges. This situation is becoming unbearable for many residents and students, particularly parents who are struggling to meet these financial demands, in which some parents will have to borrow loans to make ends meet,” the letter stated.
Citing examples, the letter noted that a single-room apartment in Ibodi now goes for ₦150,000, excluding agent fees.
“We respectfully appeal to Your Majesty and our revered elders to intervene and help regulate these costs. The current standard of living is becoming unattainable for the common indigene,” the letter added.
