MBBS: FG set to introduce central Posting for housemanship programme

Federal Government, through the Federal  Ministry of Health  is concluding a permanent  arrangement  to introduce a central posting for all Bachelors of  Medicine and Bachelors of Surgery(MBBS) graduating students  for their housemanship  training programmes in all the  registered Teaching Hospitals in the country from next academic session.

The Registrar, Medical and Dental Council  Of Nigeria(MDCN), Dr Abdulmumini  Ibrahim, gave the hint recently  at an induction ceremony organised  for the  Bowen University maiden  Medical students, having completed their medical  academic and   research training  programmes  in the university.

According to him, the introduction of  the central posting arrangement, courtesy of  the Minister of Health, Professor  Issac  Adewole  initiative  is meant to address the  difficulties associated with housemanship  placement in the country.

MDCN Registrar, who  attributed the challenges to poor funding of the programme by all concerned hospitals across the country, stated that the Minister has embarked on a special  Fund  raising project  to execute the programme at the central level,  such that every  medical inductees from all  the MDCN accredited  Colleges of Health Sciences, Public or private institutions in the country, will  have equal access to housemanship  training programme  without  any discrimination.

According to him, MDCN has the statistics of inductees and the available hospitals in the country, which he said would make dispatch arrangement   stress free for the council, as the  Minister  is succeeding in his fund raising process for the programme.

Dr  Ibrahim, who described Bowen University medical inductees as excellent  graduates, following  MDCN’s  confirmed experienced  human resources and ultra  modern  teaching/  research facilities in the institution, enjoined the inductees to specialise in different fields of their interest  in the medical  world, stressing that first degree in medical disciplines   is just the starting point in the medical profession.

“Your specialisation will increase your chances in employment opportunities and relevance in the medical sector, home and abroad,” he concluded.

Speaking in the  same vein, The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Matthew Ojo reiterated the commitment of the institution to ensure its  compliance  with  the  accredited bodies’ regulations and standards for every academic and professional programmes in the university.

He said, as a faith – based  Ivory Tower,  the management will adhere to the vision and mission of the institution which is,  to be the foremost institution for producing first rate graduates in sciences, health science, technology and humanities with qualitative, functional, morally sound education in the most cost – effective manner.
