The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of four suspects linked to the deadly attack on police officers in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area, which claimed the lives of two civilians on Monday, August 24, 2026.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungura, paraded the suspects on Thursday at the Command Headquarters in Osogbo.
He identified them as Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21; Olalere Taiwo, 21; Olalere Ademola, 26; and Bankole Abiodun, 20.
Giving details of the incident, CP Zungura said the DPO Ikire Division and his men responded to a distress call at the Naira & Kobo area of Ikire when they were ambushed by about 30 armed hoodlums.
According to him, “During the attack, the hoodlums forcefully snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen. One of them, popularly known as Ayewo, began shooting indiscriminately with the stolen rifle.
“Three policemen and two passers-by were hit. The two civilians later died, while the injured officers are receiving treatment in hospital. The attackers fled with the police rifle.”
The CP said that following credible intelligence and technical analysis, police operatives arrested the four suspects on Wednesday, August 26.
During interrogation, the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs. CP Zungura said their faction is led by Ayewo, who is believed to have fired the shots that killed the victims.
“Investigation is ongoing to apprehend Ayewo and other members of the gang still at large,” he stated.
