A Non-Governmental Organisation, TAFAfrica, has appealed to Persons with Disabilities in Osun State to turn out en masse and vote in the August 15 governorship election.
The appeal was made on Monday during the organisation’s Able2Vote Community Outreach held at the PWDs secretariat in Ede.
Speaking at the event, TAFAfrica’s Assistant Program Manager, George Anwayi, said the outreach is aimed at educating PWDs on their right to participate in the electoral process.
He said TAFAfrica has been conducting voter education for PWDs across Nigeria, but decided to take the campaign to grassroots communities where the message is needed most.
“They need this information; they need these messages more than even those in the cities. We create awareness on the provision of the law for their participation in the electoral process,” Anwayi said.
The TAFAfrica official also encouraged PWDs who have their Permanent Voter Cards but have never voted to come out, assuring them of adequate security on election day.
He commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for providing Braille Ballot Guides, magnifying glasses, large font posters and priority voting for PWDs.
However, he noted gaps in implementation based on feedback from beneficiaries.
“Some complain about not being accorded priority voting. Some have also not been given form EC40H on election day. I call on INEC to improve its distribution strategy so these materials reach those who need them,” he said.
