Governor Ademola Adeleke has stated that the European Union Election Observer Mission will monitor the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Peter Guschelbauer, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to Government House, Osogbo.
According to the statement, the EU’s interest is to strengthen democratic practice and ensure the poll conforms with Nigerian electoral laws.
The Ambassador noted that the Osun election will serve as a key test ahead of the 2027 general elections and urged all political actors to adhere to the rule of law for subnational stability.
Accompanied by the embassy’s political adviser, Mr Guschelbauer commended the Adeleke administration for its focus on good governance.
He also highlighted cultural ties between Austria and Osun, citing the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, and said Austria is keen on deepening business partnerships with Osun in agriculture, renewable energy and other sectors.
Governor Adeleke, while receiving the delegation, called for increased international observation, saying EU involvement will reinforce compliance with the Electoral Act and promote a free and fair process.
He added that Osun remains open to investors, with opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, education, technology, mining and vocational development.
