The Kamarudeen Makinde-led faction of the Osogbo Progressives Union, OPU, has said it has not endorsed any candidate for the August 15, 2026 Osun State governorship election and is still consulting stakeholders in the town.
In a statement signed on Thursday by Makinde, the union said the clarification became necessary after reports credited to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji Olanipekun, suggested that the OPU would support the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The OPU said it is a registered association operating within the law and has not taken any position on the election.
“Our sole interest is any agenda that can collectively bring real development and growth to Osogbo and its people. We are in a serious marathon of consultation with elders and community leaders,” the statement read.
It added that the current executive would not rush into a decision on an election that affects the collective interest of Osogbo. According to the union, residents respect the leadership because it avoids hasty conclusions on sensitive matters.
While recognising the monarch’s right to personal opinion, the union said such views should not be presented as the position of Osogbo people. “Personal opinion is important to be separated from being taken and presented as a collective decision of the people,” it stated.
The union also urged the Ataoja to “remain a father to all residents irrespective of political affiliation.”
