Twelve political parties in Osun State, under the coalition ‘The Democrat’, have announced plans to hold a Peace Summit ahead of the August 15, 2026, governorship election to ensure a free, fair, and credible poll.
The parties involved are the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Action Alliance (AA), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Boot Party, Labour Party (LP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), African Action Congress (AAC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, the Chairman of NNPP and Chairman of ‘The Democrat’, Odeyemi, said the summit would bring together stakeholders in the electoral process for critical discussions on the peaceful conduct of the election.
Odeyemi stated that party chairmen have a responsibility to promote peace regardless of political differences.
“As the gubernatorial election draws near, we felt there is a need for us as party chairmen to gather the stakeholders in the electoral process under one roof for critical discussion, hence the need for this Peace Summit,” he said.
“The main purpose is to map out ways of having a peaceful electoral process before, during, and after the election and reach a conclusive agreement,” he added.
“Osun belongs to all of us, regardless of political party differences, and we, as party chairmen, must play our roles of promoting and sustaining a free, fair, credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful electoral environment in our dear state,” Odeyemi stressed.
He expressed hope that the forthcoming election would be rancour-free, emphasising “the values of tolerance, accommodation, and peaceful living among residents irrespective of the outcome of the August 15, 2026, gubernatorial election.”
Odeyemi described the summit as a first-of-its-kind in Osun and said the date would be announced soon. “We strongly believe that it will change the narratives of our governorship election,” he concluded.
