Hoodlums attack Osun Amotekun office, injure officers, steal firearms

Hoodlums on Monday evening allegedly attacked the Egbedore Local Government Command headquarters of the Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun, in Awo, leaving several officers injured and firearms reportedly stolen.

According to the spokesperson of Osun Amotekun, Yusuf Idowu, the incident occurred around 8:00 p.m. after a civilian fled to the Amotekun office seeking refuge after being chased and assaulted by suspected hoodlums.

Idowu noted that trouble started when the victim, after leaving a local eatery, encountered an individual with whom he had a prior disagreement over a football-related altercation the previous day.

The Osun Amotekun mouthpiece added that eyewitness accounts indicated that the suspect mobilised a gang, which attacked the victim with dangerous weapons, including machetes.

The victim, however, managed to escape and ran to the Amotekun command office for safety.

The spokesperson said, “However, upon discovering that the victim had taken refuge within the facility, the assailants regrouped and returned in significantly larger numbers reportedly in the hundreds and launched a coordinated attack on the Amotekun command.

“During the assault, the hoodlums vandalised office infrastructure, destroyed operational equipment, and inflicted injuries on officers who attempted to defend the premises and the victim. The attackers also breached security within the facility, further assaulted the victim with knives and machetes, and made away with firearms belonging to the command.

“Despite the intensity of the attack, Amotekun personnel were able to repel the assailants and restore order. Five suspects were apprehended at the scene and have since been transferred to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Awo for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“The Osun Amotekun Corps has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a brazen act of lawlessness and a direct assault on the state’s security architecture. Authorities have assured the public that efforts are underway to recover the stolen weapons and bring all perpetrators to justice.”
