The Executive Director, World Institute for Peace, Lamina Kamiludeen, has urged the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji, to put necessary mechanisms in top gear to bring an end to the rampant killings across our communities in the capital city.
Kamiludeen’s plea came following the violence which occurred yesterday in Osogb,o, where a member of the National University of Road Transport Workers, Kazeem Oyewole, was killed.
In a post on his Facebook page, the activist said Osogbo, which is now prone to violence, was once a peaceful town.
He wrote, “Osogbo was not like this, even in the early 2000s. In the past, it was one of the most peaceful cities in the entire Nigeria. It is deeply painful that the situation has now been reversed.
“His Royal Majesty, the Ataoja of Osogbo, must urgently put all necessary mechanisms in top gear to bring an end to the rampant killings across our communities.
“When violence became unbearable in Ondo Kingdom, the Osemawe of Ondo took decisive action by leading public rallies and invoking traditional sanctions against anyone who participated in or supported acts of social violence. Today, Ondo stands as a peaceful land.
“Similarly, when cult-related killings escalated in Ile-Ife, the Ile Oodua intervened by organizing a traditional oath for a suspected palace chief who was believed to be harboring criminals.
“The oath was taken in the presence of traditional authorities, and strong curses were pronounced on anyone involved in or supporting criminal activities. Since then, there have been no reported cases of such violence in Ife. Osogbo must do better”.
