Owa Obokun warns against ‘Omo Onile’ activities, land grabbing in Ijesaland

The Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Clement Haastrup, has reiterated that unlawful activities of Omo Onile and arbitrary use of community authority to harass, intimidate and extort landowners will not be tolerated in Ijesaland.

Oba Haastrup stated this on Saturday while inaugurating the reconstituted 9-man Owa Committee on Land Matters and Chieftaincy Affairs in his palace at Ilesa.

According to a post by one of his aides, Isaac Haastrup, the monarch warned that land must not be turned into an instrument of fear, stating that anyone caught using community authority to oppress genuine landowners and developers would face the full weight of tradition and the law.

“Land is a source of home, livelihood, identity, inheritance and investment. It must not become a source of fear and intimidation through extortion and manipulation,” the monarch warned.

Owa Haastrup said his throne carries a duty to ensure that no person is oppressed because of status, influence or position, stressing that unity, peace and security of Ijesaland remain paramount to him.

He also warned law-enforcement agencies against taking sides in land disputes, urging them to remain neutral and professional.

He charged members of the newly inaugurated committee to be transparent, fair and above board in handling land and chieftaincy matters, warning that no member should use the assignment to advance private interest or settle scores.
