Netizens knock Osun govt over public parade of waste offenders

Netizens have condemned the Osun State government over the public parade of over 30 persons arrested for dumping refuse on roads and drainage channels in Osogbo, describing the action as inhumane.

osun.life reports that the Osun Amotekun Corps on Wednesday, October 6, announced that it arrested the suspects during a midnight enforcement operation carried out with environmental sanitation officials.

A video of the parade was also uploaded on the Corps’ official Facebook page.

Commenting on the video, netizens faulted the government for shaming civil offenders while covering up hardened criminals.

A Facebook user, Femi Khalid, while commenting on the video, said, “Subjecting people to this can only be described as inhumanity. Where did the government provide as dumping site, where is trash can in the street.”

In his own comment, Adeyemi Odetunde stated that, ‘In as much as I give the Corps credit for a job well done, I believe their faces ought not to be shown in this manner while reporting issues like this. Please, let us be mindful of the privacy and dignity of the individuals involved.”

“This is nonsense. If you apprehend a criminal, you will cover their face. Why did you expose this person’s face?” Adewole Olawale wrote.

Arisen Obanla added, “You should have protected their image as you do to the destructive criminals. They are just civil offenders, please.”

Afusat Adesola, who claimed to be a resident, said the government failed to provide waste bins.

“They don’t provide any dust bin for us, and they started arresting the people that dumped something on the road. Is it like that before? Released them ooo, let them go to their house,” she stated.

Akinwumi Olarinde, who appealed for mercy, said, “Dumping waste along the road is uncalled for, but the government should show mercy to the offenders because these people were the ones who voted for this present administration.”

Another resident, Olaide Oyawale, stated that, “Aregbesola provided dustbins and also a big refuse container and his government keep advertising on radio but nothing like such you keep arresting them, calling them offenders. I don’t support them, but government also need to put things in places before taking action.”
