Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi, representing Osun Central, has dismissed claims that Thursday’s Supreme Court judgement has terminated his re-election bid.
It would be recalled that the apex court had upheld the appeal filed by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, against the Court of Appeal judgement that voided parts of the Electoral Act 2026 relating to party primaries and membership registers.
In a statement by his media office on Saturday, Fadeyi said the process that produced him as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Osun Central Senatorial District in the 2027 polls strictly adhered to the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
The lawmaker described reports of his disqualification as speculative and unfounded, adding that those behind the insinuations were political opponents jittery over his wide acceptance and popularity ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to him, the process that bestowed the PDP ticket on him for a second term is clear, legal and approved by all relevant party executives.
Fadeyi noted that the PDP followed the provisions of the electoral law and that everything was done in accordance with the law and the party’s laid down rules for all its candidates in the 2027 elections.
He clarified that neither the PDP nor himself were parties to the suit, stressing that the main parties to the judgement were the Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, and the Young Progressives Party, YPP.
The lawmaker added that constitutional lawyers have maintained that the recent Supreme Court judgement does not in any way invalidate names of candidates already published by INEC.
