A 49-year-old man, Segun Benjamin, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Osogbo for allegedly producing and possessing adulterated tea and drinks unfit for human consumption.
Benjamin was arraigned on Thursday on three counts of felony before Chief Magistrate Dr Olusegun Ayilara, with the offences said to have been committed on or before July 20, 2026, at Odo-Ola Street, Igbona area, Osogbo.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Temitope Fatoba, told the court that the defendant was found in possession of various adulterated products including Bright Life Herbal Tonic, Kaye Bitters, Bright Life Herbal Teas, Atura Herbal Balm and Dr Fresh Super Bleach.
According to the charge sheet, Benjamin and others now at large allegedly conspired to expose for sale things unfit for food or drink and adulterated counterfeit products, contrary to Section 517 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun State, 2002.
He was also accused of possessing and unlawfully adulterating various teas and drinks with intent to sell them as food or drink, knowing they were noxious and unfit for human consumption, contrary to Sections 243(1) and 243(2) of the Criminal Code.
The defence counsel, Barrister K.E. Ngwoke, moved an oral bail application, assuring the court that the defendant is ready to stand trial.
In his ruling on the bail application, Chief Magistrate Ayilara granted Benjamin bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties – one a house owner with valid ID and title documents, the other a responsible person with three-year tax clearance and verifiable address – and adjourned the case to November 30, 2026, for hearing.
