The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has appealed to power brokers in Northern Nigeria to allow President Bola Tinubu to complete eight years in office.
The monarch, in a statement on Wednesday, said the North and the Yoruba have a heavenly bond and urged Northerners to respect the cordial historical relationship between the two regions.
He said the existing understanding and cooperation between Yorubas and Northern Nigeria can be sustained through support for Tinubu’s re-election.
Oba Akanbi said power balance is necessary to cement Nigeria’s unity and promote sportsmanship between the two blocs, describing Tinubu as a unifier whose reforms will benefit all.
“Nigeria as a federating nation is divided into Northern and Southern parts. Yorubas constitute a significant part of Southern Nigeria. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, being a Yoruba man from South Western Nigeria, deserves eight years in office as president after his predecessor, late Muhammadu Buhari, a Northerner, who also spent eight years.
“One other motivating reason for Northerners to support Tinubu is the historical understanding between Northern Nigeria and South Western Nigeria. Both have built an uncompromising understanding that must be sustained. In the South West, we supported late President Buhari to rule for eight years. The North should pay back. After President Tinubu’s eight years, we will return power to them,” he said.
The monarch expressed confidence that power rotation would cement national unity and allow the President to complete his reform agenda.
