The Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, has urged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to embrace “Policing with Humanity” as a strategy for restoring public trust and improving security nationwide.
Oba Abolarin made the call during an engagement with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Police Mobile College, Ila Orangun, Osun State.
In a post on his Facebook page, the monarch said the engagement examined the current realities of policing in Nigeria, including underfunded stations, insecurity, and anger and distrust between the police and citizens.
He stressed that higher law must guide police operations.
“Because a nation cannot be safe if its people are afraid of those sworn to protect them. Because Section 14(2)(b) of the Constitution says it clearly: ‘The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government’,” Oba Abolarin stated.
He outlined three key truths agreed on during the session.
“First, that the Constitution remains the first manual for policing, and it protects the rights to Life, Dignity, Liberty, Privacy, and Protest, above all Force Orders.
“Second, that bail is free, and that acts of illegality and extortion destroy public trust. A man extorted today will not call police tomorrow.
“Third, that the future demands a new kind of officer with Legal Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence, and Technological Intelligence — an officer that a trader in Osogbo, a student in Ile-Ife, and a youth in Oke-Ila Orangun can call without fear.”
The traditional ruler noted that policing with humanity is not a sign of weakness, but a strategy to win information, secure convictions, and ultimately win the people.
Oba Abolarin thanked the Commandant of the College and the officers for their attention, questions, and commitment to service.
