Organised labour in Osun State on Monday rejected allegations by the All Progressives Congress, APC, that the palliative paid to workers and pensioners by the state government was a strategy to influence votes ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
Speaking during a protest at the front of the state secretariat, the workers and pensioners said the financial intervention was a response to their request for relief to cushion the impact of economic hardship.
Speaking on behalf of labour, the Osun NLC Chairman, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, said the unions formally wrote the state government on April 8, 2026, requesting support for workers and pensioners.
According to him, labour initially demanded N20,000 per worker, but the government approved N10,000 after a meeting with Governor Ademola Adeleke.
“It is not a crime to have a governor who is workers-friendly. It is not a crime to have a governor who believes workers and pensioners should enjoy their lives,” Arapasopo said, adding that the payment was not tied to any political party.
He also condemned alleged attacks and violence in parts of the state ahead of the election, accusing security agencies of failing to address the situation.
“Thugs have been going around shooting here and there, and the police who are supposed to do their duty are doing nothing,” he said.
