The immediate past Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye, has promised that civil servants and retirees will be a top priority under an All Progressives Congress government led by its governorship candidate, Mr Bola Oyebamiji.
Owoeye, who gave the assurance on Friday during a town-hall meeting with residents of Salaam Street, Osogbo, dismissed claims that the APC is anti-worker, saying civil servants remain central to the party’s governance philosophy.
Speaking on the modulated salary period under former governor Rauf Aregbesola, the ex-speaker described it as a “painful but necessary fiscal intervention” adopted during a global economic recession that drastically reduced federal allocations to states.
He added, “It was an improvisation to ensure government did not resort to downsizing and mass sack of workers.”
Owoeye noted that the administration of ex-Governor Gboyega Oyetola inherited the same economic challenges but deployed “ingenious and brilliant strategies” to end modulated salaries and restore regular payment of wages, despite depleted federal receipts.
In contrast, Owoeye accused the present administration of mismanaging the current era of increased federal allocations under the APC-led Federal Government of President Bola Tinubu.
He said Aroko-Omigade and other worker-dominated areas have suffered neglect under the current government.
“I make a vow today that Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji will prioritise workers’ welfare when he assumes office. Osun workers will enjoy better welfare under Oyebamiji’s administration,” Owoeye promised.
He urged residents to vote for the APC in the August 15 governorship election, citing the party’s track record of equitable distribution of public infrastructure across the state.
Community leaders at the meeting appreciated Oyebamiji for personally intervening to grade and rehabilitate Salaam Street after previous appeals to government went unanswered.
