The Osun State Police Command on Sunday dismissed allegations of a political “hit list” ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the claim by the Imole Campaign Council was false.
The Deputy Director-General of the council, Kolapo Alimi, had alleged that 46 people, including the Commissioner for Energy, Ademola Adeyemo, were marked for arrest, mainly in Ikire, headquarters of Irewole Local Government Area.
Alimi further claimed that security reports indicated a coordinated plan by political opponents in collusion with compromised operatives to arrest opposition figures and transfer them to Abuja to keep them out of circulation during the election.
He listed other names including Idris Idowu Jooda, Pastor Paul Akinola, Mukaila Yusuf, and Dr Kazeem Atoba, and called on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure neutral deployment of personnel.
Responding, Ojelabi said police operations were focused on crime prevention and not targeted at any individual or political party.
“We are raiding black spots and criminal hideouts every day to sanitise the environment for the forthcoming election. We don’t have any list anywhere; the police do not formulate any list. We are only working with criminal records that we have,” he said.
He advised residents to avoid late-night movements and association with persons with criminal records to prevent being caught in ongoing raids.
