The campaign council for the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke has faulted the APC governorship candidate in Osun State, Mr Bola Oyebamiji, over his absence from the National Peace Committee’s Peace Accord meeting held in Osogbo on Thursday.
The spokesman for the council, Pelumi Olajengbesi, in a statement on Friday, described the APC candidate’s failure to attend as a demonstration of sheer arrogance and disdain for the people of Osun State.
Olajengbesi said the meeting had been scheduled months in advance, making Oyebamiji’s decision to attend a campaign rally in Iwo instead unjustifiable.
He noted that all candidates were expected to personally participate, especially given recent incidents of electoral violence in the state.
According to him, a member of Oyebamiji’s campaign council, Kola Olabisi, represented him at the event while his running mate, Kayode Adereti, arrived after the signing of the Peace Accord had ended.
“The question remains whether attendance at such a crucial event is a responsibility that should be delegated,” he said.
The council spokesman added that Oyebamiji lost the opportunity to publicly demonstrate his commitment to peaceful elections before members of the National Peace Committee and other dignitaries, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.
He said the absence had heightened concerns over the APC’s commitment to peaceful democratic participation.
“At a time when political actors should be reassuring the public of their dedication to violence-free elections, such a decision sends the wrong message,” Olajengbesi stated.
