The gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has promised to restore the 67-year-old Ago-Owu Farm Settlement to its original mandate as a model agricultural hub if elected on August 15.
Oyebamiji pledged on Wednesday during a campaign visit to the settlement located at Ayedaade/Isokan Federal Constituency.
The APC gubernatorial candidate was represented by the Co-Chairman of the Osun APC Governorship Campaign Council, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye.
Established in 1959 by the Old Western Region government under Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Ago-Owu spans vast land within the Ago-Owu Forest Reserve and currently houses over 15,000 farmers across eight sites.
Owoeye, a former House of Assembly speaker, said an APC government would return the settlement to the Awolowo vision of food security and rural prosperity.
“Farmers are the backbone of our economy, yet this administration has abandoned them — no tractors, no fertilisers, and no real support,” he said, adding that, “We will eliminate waste and deploy modern agricultural machinery.”
He listed key interventions to include rehabilitation of farm access roads, establishment of ultra-modern processing facilities, and a guaranteed off-take system where government buys directly from farmers to end post-harvest losses.
“We will also collaborate with federal and local governments to ensure Ago-Owu functions optimally again,” Owoeye added.
He urged the settlers to vote for Oyebamiji to actualise Awolowo’s founding vision.
In his remarks, the President of Ago-Owu Farm Settlement, Comrade Ojo Joseph Kolawole, said the community has suffered years of neglect, with no health centre, clean water, telephone network, stable electricity, or motorable roads.
He also raised the alarm over encroachment by illegal gold miners, saying the livelihood of members is under threat.
According to him, appeals to the current administration to halt plans to cede parts of the agricultural zone to miners have yielded no result.
“We are yearning for an agriculture-friendly government. We have followed Asiwaju Oyebamiji’s antecedents. He is a reliable personality with the capacity to transform our state positively,” Kolawole said.
Members of the APC delegation on the visit included Hon. Taiwo Oluga, Hon. Bayo Olodo, Mrs Folashade Ojo, Hon. Wale Azeez, and Engr. Dayo Olawunmi, among others.
