The member representing Obokun State Constituency in the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Adewumi Adeyemi Irekandu, has condemned the arrest of one Oluwasesan Orija, popularly known as “Mewo”, a member of the Accord Party, describing it as political intimidation that has no place in a democracy.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Irekandu alleged that armed security operatives invaded Orija’s residence in Esa Oke in the early hours of the day, searched the house, and whisked him away in the presence of his wife.
Orija is the ACCORD Party leader in Esa Oke and a traditional chief in the community.
The lawmaker alleged that the operation also targeted other opposition members in Esa Oke.
He claimed that security agents attempted to arrest more individuals and, in some cases, forced doors open when the persons could not be found.
Irekandu expressed concern that while no arrest has been made over the killing of one Rogba in Esa Oke, security forces were seen moving against opposition figures.
“This contrast naturally raises serious questions in the minds of the people and undermines public confidence in the impartiality of law enforcement,” he said.
He called on the Inspector General of Police to investigate the incidents and ensure that policing remains professional, impartial and politically neutral.
“Where any person is alleged to have committed an offence, the law must take its course through due process and not through actions capable of creating fear or political tension,” he added.
