Army to investigate alleged harassment of UNIOSUN students

The Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, on Tuesday, said it has launched an investigation into allegations that some newly recruited personnel harassed, assaulted, and sexually intimidated students of Osun State University, UNIOSUN.

A statement issued by Army Public Relations Officer, Major Yahaya Ibrahim, on behalf of the Commandant said the Army received the allegations from the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Southwest Zone D, with concern.

“The Nigerian Army exists to protect all citizens, especially the youth, who are the future of the nation. Any conduct that falls short of that mandate is unacceptable,” the statement said.

The statement said no student or law-abiding citizen should ever feel unsafe or be subjected to harassment, intimidation or assault by those entrusted with the security of lives and property.

It added that the Commandant has directed a probe to ascertain the facts of the incident and bring perpetrators to justice.

The Army described the alleged actions as inconsistent with “the training and character development of recruits at the Depot.”
