Students of Osun State University, Osogbo campus, have alleged that some newly recruited Nigerian Army personnel invaded their hostels and assaulted male students and sexually harassing female students.
Witnesses said the recruits, believed to be from the Nigerian Army Depot, Osogbo, were earlier seen around the students’ community, claiming to be relaxing at entertainment centres.
Tension reportedly escalated after some of the recruits allegedly harassed young men and demanded money transfers to specific bank accounts.
The group later stormed about 20 hostels, including Cristalag, Kings and Queens hostels, where they allegedly attacked occupants.
Female students claimed they were forced to strip and were sexually assaulted, while male students said they were beaten. Several students also alleged that phones and other valuables were stolen during the raid.
Reacting to the incident, UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor, Professor Clement Adebooye, described it as “gory.” He reportedly called the perpetrators “animals” who “should not be living among humans.”
The Coordinator of NANS Zone D, Josiah Adeyemo, also condemned the attack.
He urged President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Army Staff to identify and prosecute those involved to deter future occurrences.
As of press time, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official response to the allegations.
