2026: Open up on Osun flashpoints before August 15 – Imole Campaign Council tells INEC

The Chairman, Civil Society Matters of The Imole Campaign Council, Mr Funmiso Babarinde, has welcomed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s early risk mapping for the August 15, 2026, governorship election.

Babarinde described INEC’s identification of 385 flashpoints and over 200 difficult terrains across Osun’s 30 LGAs as a positive move toward a peaceful poll, noting that the identification must come with transparency.

In a statement issued on Monday in Osogbo, Babarinde said, “Early assessment is commendable. It shows INEC is taking threats seriously.

“But assessment alone is not enough. Stakeholders need to know where the risks are, within security limits, so we can all prepare.”

He urged the commission to publicly name the LGAs and communities classified as flashpoints and difficult terrains where disclosure will not compromise safety.

Babarinde said such information would help parties, observers, civil society and residents to plan voter education, logistics, and peace efforts ahead of election day.

The Council also asked INEC to fix and announce dates for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards without delay.

“Many eligible voters are still waiting. A clear PVC collection timeline will prevent last-minute rush and disenfranchisement,” he said.

Babarinde further called on INEC to release the updated voter registration data and the certified voters’ register to all participating parties, as provided under the Electoral Act.
