Olufon wants 100-year market upgrade to international standard to boost Osun economy

The Olufon of Ifon-Osun, Oba Peter Oluwole Akinyooye, has called on government at all levels to transform the town’s 100-year-old Obada Market into a modern, international-standard commercial hub to attract investment and grow the local economy.

The monarch made the demand on Sunday, June 21, at the grand finale of a three-day centenary celebration held at the Olufon’s Palace Square, Ifon-Osun.

Describing the market as “an enduring symbol of enterprise and prosperity,” Oba Akinyooye said Obada Market remains one of the largest agriculture and livestock markets in Osun State.

Giving a historical account, the traditional ruler explained that while the market has existed for centuries as a centre of commerce and social interaction, it was relocated to its present site by Late Oba Bankẹ́ẹ̀sà Atanda Akinyooye I and officially received government recognition in 1926.

“Obada Market is not merely a marketplace; it is a living legacy of commerce, culture and communal strength whose glorious history will continue to inspire generations yet unborn,” the Olufon told a packed square filled with traditional rulers, government officials, traders, business leaders and indigenes from across Nigeria.

The centenary programme ran from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, June 21. It opened on Friday with Awards of Excellence presented to distinguished personalities, families and compounds that contributed to the market’s growth over the decades.

The session was followed by cultural displays and goodwill messages praising the foresight of the founding fathers and the resilience of traders.

On Saturday, market exhibitions showcased Ifon-Osun’s commercial heritage and economic opportunities. Traders, artisans and entrepreneurs displayed products and services, while visitors enjoyed traditional dances and musical performances reflecting Orolu Kingdom’s culture.

The grand finale featured the conferment of honorary chieftaincy titles. Otunba (Engr.) Oluwole Kolawole and Dr Oluwatoyin Kolawole were installed as Gbọ́bagùntẹ́ and Yeye Gbọ́bagùntẹ́ of Ifon-Osun, Orolu Kingdom. Chief (Pastor) Sola Akande and Chief (Dcns) Funmilayo Akande received the titles of Aarẹ and Yeye Aarẹ Jagunmólú of Ifon-Osun, while Chief (Mrs.) Hamzat Jelilat was installed as the Erelú of Ifon-Osun, Orolu Kingdom.
