Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress, APC, failed in an attempt to stop a rally organised by the candidate of the Accord Party for Ijesa North federal constituency, Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Rasheed described an earlier APC account of the event as “fake news” and claimed that the opposition party had sought to prevent the rally from taking place.
He alleged that the APC attempted to use the police to halt the mobilisation and campaign event by claiming to have scheduled another political programme on the same day.
According to the governor’s spokesman, the move was intended to provide grounds for the cancellation of political activities in the area.
Rasheed further claimed that the Osun State Police Command issued a statement cancelling the rally without consulting the state government, despite Governor Adeleke being the chief host of the event.
“Mr Governor then decided to engage the police authorities, calling attention to the inherent illegality and the partisan implications of the police position on the subject,” Rasheed said.
“The police authorities later bowed to fair policing requirements and withdrew their reported opposition to the hosting of the rally,” he added.
The governor’s spokesman maintained that the event was conducted lawfully and denied allegations that Governor Adeleke disobeyed any police directive.
“We submit that the rally was held under all legal conditions. Mr Governor did not disobey any police directive because there was no legal directive to obey,” he stated.
