The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, on Tuesday, staged a solidarity protest in Osogbo, demanding the safe return of colleagues and students abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The state Chairman of NUT, Babalola Babatunde, who led the protest, said the incident has shown that the government must take the issue of security seriously.
“We are out today in solidarity with our colleagues and students who were abducted in Oriire Local Government, Oyo State,” he said.
Babatunde sympathised with families of those killed by bandits while in captivity.
“We sympathised with the families of those who were killed among the abducted victims,” he said.
He called on both state and federal governments to prioritise the rescue of victims still in captivity.
Babalola also appealed to the federal government to address rising insecurity in schools. He warned that without adequate security, learning would remain disrupted.
“We are calling on the governments to ensure the safe return of those who are still in captivity.
“We are also appealing to the federal government to look into the security issues and find a lasting solution to the problem. Without adequate security in our schools, the learning environment would not be conducive,” he said.
