The Osun state Police command has condemned the recent acts of vandalism and destruction of political billboards and other government symbols within the state.
The command in a statement by its spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, described the act as criminal and a direct attack on public property, constituted authority, and the relative peace currently being enjoyed in Osun State.
The statement said the development is capable of inciting tension, causing unnecessary unrest, and undermining efforts to promote the state’s relative peace.
The Command, therefore, urges all political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct their activities within the ambit of the law and in strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.
“Political actors are advised to play according to the rules by embracing peaceful engagement, political tolerance, and lawful conduct, while refraining from acts capable of causing breakdown of law and order in the state,” the statement stated.
The state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, warns all individuals or groups involved in these acts to desist forthwith, as the Command will not tolerate any form of criminality that could disrupt public peace.
“The police have commenced a discreet investigation into the incidents with a view to identifying, arresting, and prosecuting the perpetrators in accordance with the law,” it added.
